Famous WaterFalls

Bordering Zimbabwe and Zambia, Africa

Wednesday, September 15th, 2010

David Livingstone once said that scenes so lovely must have been gazed upon by angels in their flight. He was a Scottish explorer who was the one who saw the famous Victoria Falls.

On November 17, 1855, David Livingstone, a Scotsman, discovered the astonishing Victoria Falls on his exploration to the mouth of Zimbare River. He was amazed t find out that the Victoria Falls got its name from the Queen Victoria. Nevertheless, it is also called Mosi-oa-tunya by the Makololo people. This term come to mean that it is ‘the smoke of the thunders.’ The mist, which the falls generate, must have contributed to this name.

Moreover, Victoria Falls has a height that can be seen from 25 miles away. It must be so tall because no falls can be seen that far if it wasn’t.

Like all other falls, the changing season has something to do with the transformation that occurs in the water of Victoria Falls. When dry season comes, the water volume reduces to 12,500 cubic feet compared to when wet season arrives; the water reaches up to 320,000 cubic feet per second. The river’s flow occurs on April and the lowest ebb is October.

When the waterfall seems to have a great volume of water, it looks like an overflowing bathtub except that this waterfall is found on the cliff. This overflowing water spills on the Earth’s rift. When you try to visit Victoria Falls, you will view the neighboring gorge entrance with water escapes in it, which in a zigzag course, creates a crisscross of islands, called Livingstone Island, named after David Livingstone. There exists five falls because of the four islands found in Victoria Fall edges.

What are Moonbows? They are rainbows. Other effects or results that occur are the mists and the moonbows of the waterfalls is the light of the moon being prismed, creating a multiple series of colors that will exquisitely lure you to it. Moonbows are rainbows so imagine how beautiful and amazing it would be like to see these effects on a waterfall. This effect however requires a regularity or consistency in the condition of the waterfalls like the lack of pollution, the moon’s unimpeded light. Nevertheless, the waterfalls can produce the moonbows occasionally so there is no need to wonder or worry about it.

Furthermore, if you want to experience the beauty of Victoria Falls, you may start driving to Mosi-oa-Tunya National Park in Zambia and the other Victoria Falls National Park in Zimbabwe, which are the two national parks where the falls is located. Once you reach the place, you will definitely feel the amazing energy and life of the waterfalls as its water come rushing down the cliff. You will also get to experience a closer look at nature’s treasure and gift that you will be able to appreciate and enjoy in the long run. Remember, Victoria Falls is just a drive away to adding another great life adventure in your list. But if it’s to far fetched for you to travel to Africa, you can also find many different kinds of wall fountains that would add the tranquility of flowing water to your home on a daily basis.

It has a staggering height of about 170 feet.  At the present moment, the falls is surrounded by hydroelectric plants which are constructed to provide electric energy to the two cities. The power of the falls is harnessed to supply vital energy to the neighboring towns.

Legend has it that Niagara Falls is the dwelling of two mighty gods; Iroquois, the water spirit and Seneca, the thunder god. Native people got the name of the falls from these powerful gods.

One day, an incident happened that gave the young maiden a chance to return to her place. There was an evil snake that was harming the locals who lived nearby by poisoning the water so that the wicked snake can kill all the people and eat them.

Afraid of the damage that might happen to her people, the young maiden beg to the thunder god to return to her place and warn her people. Luckily, she was allowed by the god. She saved her people by encouraging them to move to Buffalo Creek leaving the poisoned water behind.

Yosemite National Park

Wednesday, September 15th, 2010

Yosemite National Park in California has numerous exciting and fascinating attractions to see. The national park is abundant with Sequoias that are towering the forest. Aside from its soaring height, it is believed to have been millions years old. Visitors can also find big and wild grizzly bears in the area. However, there are areas around the park that are intended for human destination while other areas are for animal dwelling place. From the famous colossal Sequoias to the amazing grizzly bears, Yosemite National Park is wondrous in every way.

There are known sites that can be found in the area. The famous Old Faithful is found in this beautiful national park. This renowned landmark is visited by travelers every year. Another astonishing landmark that can be found in the area is the Yosemite Falls. It is believed to be the largest waterfall in the United States. It is such a grand waterfall in a vast stunning national park.

In addition, there are other amazing waterfalls that can be visited in the national park. One of them is the Ribbon Falls. This falls is known as the largest single-drop waterfall in the United States. It means that once the water falls from the cliff, there are no obstacles that hinder the drop. It continuously goes down from the top of the cliff to the bottom of the falls. There are also other known waterfalls that are found in South Island, New Zealand that has a similar name to the one found in the United States.

The Ribbon Falls has a staggering length of 1612 feet and a width of 30 feet. One interesting fact about this fall is that the water that goes through it comes from a tiny creek that has the same name as the falls, Ribbon Creek. The water enters through a small creek before it reaches the mouth of the falls and drops to a thousand feet.

Geologists believed that the water that passes through the creek and falls down the cliff comes from the melting ice from the glacier mountain. Up above the mountains, glaciers are abundantly found there. That is the source of the water that goes down the mountain and falls through the Ribbon Falls.

The cliff of the waterfall is grayish tan and covered with conifer trees. The trees seem to supply the area with amazing scenery and green luscious background. At the foot of the falls is covered with dark green conifer tress spreading out on its way to the valley floor.

Ribbon falls is one of the tourist attractions in the area. In fact, visitors have a look out spot where they can view the astonishing falls and its wonders. The lookout place is on the south side road that is opposite the Bridalveil Falls. Another interesting fact about the falls is that its cliff plunges from the cliffs west of the El Capitan.

And for those who enjoy the beauty of flowing water outdoors there are many different styles of outdoor water fountains available to enjoy daily in your own backyard.

Urban Waterfall – The Rhine Falls

Wednesday, September 15th, 2010

It was about 15,000 years ago that Rhine Falls, also known as the Urban Waterfall began and, at the same time, it was when there were glaciers left, which drove the falls to a different direction. These glaciers also push and carry some limestone to the other area. After glaciers, there were also fossil riverbeds causing the waterfalls harder to erode compared before but the waterfalls will be pulled back.

Going to Switzerland you will witness popularly beautiful and largest waterfalls in Europe called Rhine Falls. There are other falls as well called Muhle, Zucher, Schaffhausen falls as well. Schaffhausen can be seen on the European cliff where there lies Schloss Laufen, an old castle. There are features and details that make this waterfall distinct from others. The height of Rhine Falls which is 25 meter tall and 159 meter wide but despite that, it still remains lower than other waterfalls. There are remains or evidences of the waterfalls that is caused by the division of three sections in forms of limestone and islets.

The water of the Rhine Falls is not only known for its beauty. It is highly appreciated because of the water spills that are one fifth of the water of Niagara Falls and that they create 750,000 liters per second of it.

In addition, the Rhine Falls is surrounded with earthy feeling with the presence of the shrubs and trees, which can be seen on either side of the falls. The trees serve as habitat for animals who are at the same time the protectors of the said falls.

There are trade routes in Rhine Falls, which are basically used for transporting salt in the 13th to the 19th centuries. It travels from Lake Constance to Basel. That route includes the water that travel from Lake Constance, Bodenensee.

Ones you got to know about this magnificent work of art from above, you will have the easier time to visit ‘another world with another ambiance’ that is not far and expensive. It is one of the accessible waterfall destinations that will surely not leave you in any despair or disappointment because the waterfalls alone will make you relaxed. You will also feel overjoyed because the falls is surrounded with boat rides such as daredevil boats that you can use for another trip or type of fun and adventure in the place where there is a touch of real nature, which is very far from the city.

Even if there may be disadvantages or risks of the Rhine Falls, people do not stop to admire it and even take pictures of it. There are also advantages and benefit s of the Rhine Falls and this include the place as a whole, where the waterfalls exist. Indeed, Rhine Falls is one remarkable and captivating falls. It shows that 50,000 tourists have already been to the Rhine Falls, and have admired its natural beauty and took pictures of it as souvenir.  Now, that is something which I call fun learning. And For those who admire the beauty and tranquility of running water there are Wall Fountains available to enjoy daily in your very own house.

Upper Yosemite, the Middle Cascades and the Lower Yosemite

Wednesday, September 15th, 2010

There is a beautiful Yosemite Falls that is situated in the Yosemite National Park. The Yosemite Falls is like a threefold falls because it is composed of three falls in one location. Its measurement consist a height of 2,425 feet. Thus, it is the world’s 5th tallest waterfall and USA’s tallest waterfall.

Yosemite Falls originated its name from a Native American tribe, who call themselves Uzumati or Grizzly Bear. The Grizzly Bear that roamed around the area that time now serves as a tribute to Yosemite’s past.

The Yosemite Falls is but three falls and not as a whole, as argued by experts. The first falls under the division of Yosemite Falls, which is no longer the tallest falls unlike the Colonial Falls is called the Upper Yosemite Falls that has a height of 1,430 feet.

The form of the Yosemite Falls depends upon its slope, glaciers, rocks and erosion underneath or above the mountain where the falls can be seen. The Erosion and the scraping force of Pleistocene cause the sides of the Yosemite Valley to be carved or cut out, allowing sharp drops and free falling of waterfalls on the cliffs.

It should be well remembered that the flow or the volume of the water from the falls depends on the season that hits the area where the falls is situated. When spring comes, the water that has been melted from ice during the winter season flows down the mountain. But before this occurs, the water freezes and creates cracks on it, which can be heard from above the mountaintop. The Yosemite Falls usually spread all over the sides of gray rock during winter. In contrary, when summer arrives, there is only minimum amount of water that results to drying up the falls and the colors of the rock turns into a pale tan.

Because the waterfall is located in the forestry area, it is most likely that there are living creatures such as trees like pines, spruce and perhaps sequoias. Not all of these trees are in perfect shapes. There are those that have already been cut down but still form a work of art. These are intended in place to secure the animals. Such living things beautify the waterfalls even more.

To get to the Upper Yosemite you can ride a shuttle bus. It does not take long for you to be able to arrive at your dream paradise of waterfalls. You may also take a hike or ride a bike if you feel like internalizing the nature or the natural feel of the waterfalls and its environment. When go further, you will discover the very beauty of nature and you will be able to enjoy it more when you reach the very focal point of the park. Since the beautiful spot in Yosemite in the East side of the falls is very remarkable and magnificent to the sight, you will not find it difficult to reach it.

Girringun National Park, Australia

Wednesday, September 15th, 2010

When you go to Girringun National Park, also known as Lumholtz National Park, you will see the famous Wallaman Falls that flow from the Stony Creek, which is the Herbert River tributary. Its water is in a thin form that appears to be lightly pouring down from the face of the cliff. Basically, this flow is not absolute because it depends upon the season changes. During the rainy season, the volume rises, allowing the water to rush dramatically down the cliff.

The home of the Warrgamaygan Aboriginal People is where Wallaman existed. In that place the people undergoes a special kind of inner or spiritual connection just like what our ancestors and exercised.

The Wet Tropics World Heritage Area is associated with the existence of cultural and natural relevance. What makes the falls look great and cool is because, back in 1989, it is a part of the Wet Tropics World Heritage Area where the area appears full of life. In short, it is not dry. This is makes the Wallaman exceptional and important to mankind.

Wallaman Falls is placed on a 5,586 square miles of land where the water flows from the elevated area down to the face of the cliff called the Seaview Range. The entirety of the falls measures at an incredible height of 1,109 feet that leaves people impressive while its water drops consist of 879 feet, but in a 32 foot deep and 65 foot wide lagoon there are only two drops from the falls.

There are inhabitants in the Wallaman Falls such as animals and trees. They make the surroundings more vigorous. In the Herbert River there is a saw-shelled turtle, which is rare in other countries but definitely visible in the Eastern part of Australia. The unique living creatures consist of the marsupial species called Platypus and then there exist a strong forearms lizard that lives on land and water, which also uses its forearms and tail to swim to the falls.

The plants and trees include lichens, epiphytes, mosses and many others. The trees also include Eucalyptus, also known as Eucalyptus trees where its 700 species can be found spreading throughout the Wallaman Falls. There is also the Causarines, also known as She Oaks, Australian Pines or Beefwood which are naturally found in tropical areas. The Grass Tree, on the other hand, is of varying species that occupy the area of the Wallaman Falls, allowing a shading effect with its fan-like or skirt-like grass found on its trunks and branches.

From the name itself, Girringun National Park, it already shows that the place is a rare area that offers a unique range of natural resources right from water up to the lines of trees and animals. Visit the Girringun National Park and see the divine gifts of nature that not all has the opportunity to see. Once you get to that place, you will witness the never-ending harmony of the sound of water and the breathtaking scenery perfect for picture taking that is far beyond comparison to other waterfalls in the world. Tiered Waters – Mardalsfossen

Wednesday, September 15th, 2010

Waterfalls, though far and hidden, should be given importance. It contributes to the environmental development and even encourages the visitors to come. It is with Mardalsfossen Falls that people appreciate the meaning and signification of life.

Waterfalls are famous in many places. It gives a great sense of nature feel. There is one waterfall named Mardalsfossen that is famous in the valley of Romsdal, within the city of Nesset, Norway. Its water flows directly to the Eikesdalsvatnet Lake. The waterfalls in Norway are covered by a snow right from the mountaintop that is why the water comes down beautifully as a melting snow.

The series of water drops and the chain of two cascades build the Mardalsfossen Falls’ height of 2,149 feet, where the longest drop is about 975 feet. Waterfalls really cannot be measured and it totally depends on the explorer or discoverer himself on how we will identify the waterfall through series of observation including measurement. It is an endless course of flowing water where each drop has a distinct measurement.

Unfortunately, despite the controversial issue regarding the environment, a Hydroelectric Plant was built in 1970 where Mardalsfossen Falls is located. However, Arne Nss, the founder of the said falls and a Norweigan Deep Ecology movement, protested in the construction of the plant by tying himself to the falls. Everything that relates to the falls and environment, the Ecologists usually come to the rescue to preserve its life and nature. Thus, all waterfalls are utilized this way. Without their voluntary protection, the waterfalls would wither and result to a mushy and muddy place.

Especially between June and August, the channeling of waterfalls does not hinder the natural flow of the Mardalsfossen Falls at full power. There is no surprise why even at the changing volume and schedule of the Mardalsfossen Falls, still the place is being visited by both local and international people. They go to Norway to witness the great waterfalls of the said place and watch the water rushing about. To add, the changes give the Mardalsfossen Falls an amazing touch of neutrality and beauty where usually a mist appears between the two cascades, in colors of dark gray, making the place even more beautiful and breathtaking. The mist is also responsible for the waters’ white gush, making a grand and splendid view of the waterfall, which is accompanied by the melting snow on the mountain.

Because the enormity of the cliffs emphasizes more of its physique and build up to where the falls usually flow, it makes the falls seem thinner and tiny even it in actual size they are of 80 feet wide. Even the varying sizes of water and the distinct change of appearance in the cliff make the waterfalls looks enchanting and full of life.

You can absolutely save the Earth through visiting the Mardalsfossen Falls and making sure that they are untouched and that they are not abused. Since the falls is a “life giver” due to the flowing water, remain it at that and grab all the opportunity and advantage that it offers. Those who enjoy beautiful water falls like this one are sure to enjoy having one of the many different styles of tranquil floor fountains in their office or home.

The South American Jungle

Wednesday, September 15th, 2010

In the South American Jungles you will find a resemblance of the classic jungle waterfall, which is the Kaieteur Falls. Its features composed of the following: the width is 370 feet, and the 741 feet water of the Potaro River falls to the Guiana Shield, allowing the maximization of 822 feet high on the falls.

The world’s surface was not covered by any volcanic substance or elements however it becomes covered with jungle and other natural growing plants. Today there is already a process where before the water goes through the Jungle it must firstly spill in the basin. The Guyana and the Guiana Shield are the oldest surface, which is now two (2) billion years of age.

So where do these falls exist? Falls can be found in the South America, but specifically in the North Eastern portion, where Mazanuri-Potaro can be found.

There are a lot of legends about waterfalls and this one did not escape it. There are many sacrifices or offerings to appease the ravaging gods, as they put it. This will enable the world to be protected because you will acquire more from it. One assurance after a sacrifice is done is the prevention of the destruction of the Carib tribe to the people. Back in those days, Kai, Chieftain of the Patamona, sacrificed himself through canoeing through the falls for this very reason. Thus, Kaieteur became the name of the falls, where ‘Tier’ means ‘falls’ so all in all the waterfall becomes Kai Falls.

There are animals or exotic creatures that live in the place where the waterfalls is situated. There is a Golden frog. With its poisonous attribute, it will protect itself from predators. Makonaima is a bird that independently makes nests for its young. It can fly, as a matter of fact it likes venturing into different parts of the forest. Another bird that you will see lurking around the forest has colorful features such as its natural plumage color or chromatic yellow orange and it is called the Cock-of-the-Rock bird.

Aside from the magnificent waterfall there are also living things that make the National Park earthy and close to nature. One of which is the 20,000 different species of trees where 35% are endemic, therefore, the flushest rainforest is the National Park where the waterfalls and natural growing trees are located.

Try visiting the South American Jungle by a plane for convenience of perhaps if your trip is to gradually and internally observe nature then you can do so by hiking or trekking, together with the guide that will lead you to the right way. The Devil’s Throat – Iguazu Falls

Wednesday, September 15th, 2010

Iguazu Falls comes from the local Guarani language ‘y guasu,’ which means big water. There is another waterfall called ‘Garganta del Diablo’ or Devil’s throat. This name was based from the thunderous and powerful roar of water flowing down the waterfall.

Ignazu Falls started in a myth. Long time ago, a god fell in love with a mortal woman named Naipu, to whom he proposed marriage. Unfortunately the latter refused to marry him and found another man that she thinks is suited for her. The god, upon knowing this and after being pushed away, sliced down the river with full enragement and anger. Thus, now we have the Ignazu Falls.

Scientifically, Ignazu Falls is created almost by accident through the Earth crust’s fault, which results in a much higher land compared to the other. Volcanic activity has something to do with these incredible nature changes. First of all, the land is created through the dried volcanic rock that is why other water from the falls refuses to erode, making it very difficult to push through with the process of water. Thus, a backward effect occurs even if the water is in 450,000 cubic feet per seconds. This measurement occurs between November and March. However, in winter the water level changes to a lower measure compared to that of 450,000 cubic feet per second.

The Iguazu Falls was first seen in 1541 by a Spanish explorer named Alvar Nunez Cabeza de Vaca. The falls maintained unknown by so many people. Fortunate are those who were able to visit Iguazo Falls. However, the establishment of Igacu National Park and Igazu National Park in the borderline of Brazil and Argentina pave way to make a public recognition, which later became the UNESCO World Heritage Sites.

It is very unusual to see or discover a waterfall in the borderline of a certain place. However, the Ignazu Falls, which is located on the Iguaca River or Iguassa between the borderline of Brazil and Argentina, which has an estimated 300 falls in it that are 492 feet long regardless of the fact that the tallest falls has a height of 269 feet and the cliff is only 2.5 miles long. This is not unusual but it is unique.

What is unique with Ignuazu Falls is its shape. It horseshoe shape make it more memorable and distinct from other waterfalls. The borderline to where the falls is situated has lots of trees palm trees, bamboos and other greenery. Like many other water falls in The South American Jungle, its surrounded by vegetation.

The water of the Iguazo Falls do not immediately hit the falls. It usually create a mist and a beautiful prism during the day when the sun is up. As the water falls, it sound reaches miles away and this goes to show that evidently, Iguazi Falls exists in this place.

From the name itself, the Devil’s throat does not necessarily follow that it is ugly or that there is something devilish about the place or the falls. The Iguazu Falls truly is a creation that raises the standards for choosing waterfalls.

Hawaiian Paradise – Manawaiopuna Falls

Wednesday, September 15th, 2010

Manawaiopuna Falls is famously known as the Rainbow Falls. This magnificent falls is located on the island of the tropical Hawaii near the village of Hilo in the Wailulu River State park. The falls got its name from the rainbow formations visitors can see every time viewing at it. The rainbow is formed when a ray of light touches the misty water of the falls. It is such an amazing site to see, a breath taking falls with rainbow formations around it.

Rainbow Falls is not only known for its rainbow formations but also of its legendary tale. Legend has it that the falls was once a dwelling place of the god Hina. The god lives in a cave that is behind the Rainbow Falls. The god was being pestered by a large lizard named Mo’o Kuna every now and then.  Mo’o disruptively uses the force of the rivers and falls by sending fast-moving water and rocks to disturb the god Hina.

There was a time that Mo’o moved a huge boulder into the river and caused a blockage of the flow of water. It resulted to a high rise of water level spilling some waters into Hina’s cave. Outraged by the incident, Hina called her son Maui, a demigod, for help. She told him to take care of the rude and nasty lizard who had been trying to disturb her every since.

Armed with strong and might, Maui paddled his canoe to where the huge boulder has blocked the current of the river. He split the huge rock into two using his mighty strength releasing the preserved water into the downstream. In revenge, he called upon Pele to help him drive off the vicious lizard. Pele send hot lava flow to where Mo’o lived driving him out from where he is hiding to the deep potholes upstream. In fact, nowadays, visitors can see the potholes which are popularly known as the ‘boiling pots’.

As a result, the lava drove off the large lizard from his hiding place and killed him. Locals oftentimes tell of such legendary folklore. This is what this falls is about; its breath taking view and its legendary story.

Hawaii is increasing forming its land from the buildup lava flows that had been cold off in just a few seconds by the surrounding Pacific Ocean. This is what makes up the Hawaiian Islands, cold off lava flows.

There are other waterfalls that visitors can see in the island. Some may be as tall and as astonishing as the Rainbow falls. But none is like it. Its mystical story and rainbow formations drive tourists to come and visit the falls. In fact, due to its marvelous scenery, the Rainbow falls was once featured in a blockbuster film. It was once part of the Jurassic Park movie. With such awesome view and amazing feature, who would not want to incorporate this falls into their own documentary film?
