Taking Care of Your Pump to Last Longer

Monday, October 18th, 2010

Water fountains provide beauty and serenity to any office or home space. The soothing sounds that come from the water flow gives relaxation and stress relief to the people near the fountain. But if the water fountain starts to emit noise, it is defeats the purpose of having a fountain. Thus regular check up and maintenance is very important in having a fountain. And one of the most important things to monitor is the pump. The pump in your water fountain should not be too loud and it should be running quietly. In the event that the pump in your water fountain makes noise, it means that there is a problem with the way it was set up. Make sure to follow the directions properly to ensure that your fountain runs as it should be. If it does not, here are troubleshooting guidelines you can use.

Most of the time when the water fountain pump is making noise it is because either the pump is not fully submerged or the pump is vibrating against the side of the water basin. When any of the two happens, first, check if the pump is fully covered by water. If it isn’t, simply add water until the pump is fully submerged and the noise stops. Consider adding extra water to prevent the pump from emitting noise again when water evaporates. It usually takes a few minutes for the noise to stop when you have added the water because the pump is usually full of air bubbles which is where the noise originated in the first place. The pump will run quietly as soon as the air bubbles clear out.

Another reason for wall fountain water pumps to make noise is when it is vibrating against the side or bottom of the water basin. When this happens, also try to add water first. When the pump is fully covered with water and still the noise doesn’t stop, try removing the pump to see if the vibration stops. Just reinstall the pump properly when the noise or vibration stops. However, if it doesn’t, you may take an untreated sponge, meaning no soap or chemicals to pad the side or bottom of the pump. An adhesive may be used to attach the sponge to the basin so there will be no change in the water flow. This can prevent the noise from recurring.

If the following solutions do not work, you may have a faulty pump. You must contact your fountain dealer when these remedies do not work. If your pump is defective, they should be able to send you a replacement pump. However, the above mentioned remedies usually solve the problems with your water fountain pump.

Installing a Wall Fountain Made Easy

Installing a wall fountain depends on its size and weight. We recommend that a GFI electrical outlet be placed in the middle where you will install the fountain to avoid unpleasant hanging cords and for safety purposes. Just a word of caution, to prevent electrical problems, the outlet should not be in lined with the basin or hood of the fountain. A small fountain can easily be hanged just like a picture frame. These water fountains usually come with ready-made brackets on their back, which can be simply hung on a nail in the wall. Mostly, they are reassembled or require very little assembly. Just make sure that it is hung at the right level, for both appeal and safety.

For heavy fountains, it may require a number of helpers or assistance from your local electrician. It should be installed in sturdy surfaces. If your wall fountain has two or three panels, place the electrical outlet on the rear of the left-most stone, while it faces the wall. In case the fountain has a conventional plug, the outlet should be set inside the wall to make the water feature flat to the wall. You will have no problem if it has already a flat plug.

Likewise, a wall switch can be placed in order for you to simply switch on and off the fountain. If the cords are still obvious, you can easily hide it by placing a plant or decorative items in front of it.

To assist the buyer, an installation booklet is included when you buy a fountain. It has instructions on what type of walls should the fountain be installed. Irrespective of the size, you need to prepare the some tools namely Philips head screwdriver, level, hammer, stud finder, tape measure, masking tape, pencil and cordless drill.

Kid Friendly Backyards

Monday, October 18th, 2010

Growing up, we spent most of our free time in our backyard. As a kid, we enjoy observing nature, playing games, doing science experiments and engage in sports to name a few. Since a lot of time is used by kids in the backyard, it is up to us to make this environment safe for our kids and fun at the same time. Here are some tips that will help you create that safe backyard environment for your kids and shielded from the sun and would be fun still for our kids to spend their time with.

Having a bright color and whimsical background to your backyard decor will surely increase your children’s imagination and will bring in more fun for them. Wind chimes, hanging lanterns, bird houses to name a few will add a little magic to your backyard to your kids enjoyment. Miniature furniture, winged statues and ribbons hanging from tree branches and anything that is associated with fairies are excellent decors that are particularly pleasing with your little girls.

Open play areas are areas where your kids play sports and other games most of the time and more time will be spent here as the children grows older. A flat and grassy area is preferred. Some homeowners choose to install synthetic grass in their children play areas and provide advantages. The advantages of having a synthetic grass is that it is durable and could last for years and it is maintenance free. A mulch is a more effective solution if you don’t have an area of lawn that is appropriate for kids to play on. Even with just a concrete slab or bare dirt, mulch can provide you an easy fix to cover it up making the area safe for kids to play with. Moving your kids larger play sets such as swings, see-saws, slides and picnic tables, it’ll make your kids feel like they have their own playground in their own backyard. Containment is also important aside from these suggestions. The best way to contain the children are fences, tall hedges and walls made of bricks. By containing your children in the play area, will keep them out of the street and prevent strangers from coming in.

If possible, place your children’s play area in a shade. The harmful sun rays can cause not only harm on your children’s eyes but also do damage on skins. The suns rays will also prematurely age your children’s toys and play sets. A shaded tree will be a great help but if not available and play area is not close to the house, a good picnic table with a large umbrella will give them a place of refuge away from the harmful suns rays. In your landscaping, it is also advisable to avoid plants that attract insects such as wasps, yellow jackets, hornets and other stinging objects as they will surely bother your children. Fruit bearing trees are not advisable as well as fruits may drop to the ground and decays and will become a target for stinging insects as well.

Water Features are a excellent way to keep your children cool on warm days. Garden sculptures such as the Costa Brava outdoor Fountain doesn’t get your child wet but will soothe and calm your child during hot restless summer days.  There are other fountains such as the Cubist outdoor water fountain that is a nice water feature that will not only make your outdoors pleasant your children will love watching the water flow over the surfaces.

Easy Steps To Install a Wall Fountain

If you are thinking of installing a wall fountain to your office or home, setup process is an easy task but it does require assistance from a friend or an expert. Some fountains are heavy and others are too bulky to be carried or be lifted around by just a single person. Setup instructions can be requested on Specialty Living prior to purchasing of the fountain. The instructions will specify if there are any restrictions. A fax or e-mail can be sent to you as well if there is a need.

A GFI Electronic Outlet needed to be installed should you wish to hide electrical words hanging out of the fountain. This is just optional. Should you choose to install the outlet, it must be placed directly at the center of the fountain to avoid contact with water. Outlets must be placed on the left-hand stone on double and triple panel fountains. Outlets must be wired to a wall switch to avoid reaching down the fountain to turn it on and off.

If installing another electrical outlet is not an option for you, you could hide the cord behind furniture or plants or other decors to avoid chords being seen.

Caring for Your Fountain

Monday, October 18th, 2010

Fountains, whether floor, indoor, wall or outdoor fountains, are a great way to bring the outdoors in or just enhance your outdoor living area. In order to keep your fountains running at optimum performance, there are certain maintenance steps that you need to make in order to keep your fountain flowing.

·         Check the fountain’s water level and add fresh water every 2-7 days.  Some fountains go through more water than others if they splash and water naturally evaporates over time.

·         If the water in your fountain goes below the intake level of the pump you will hear a slurping sound coming from the fountain’s pump.  This could damage your pump and cause it to burn out if you do not keep the water level up.

·         If you are concerned about your fountain running out of water, it is a great idea to place it on a timer so that it will automatically turn off and on at set times.

·         If your fountain begins to grow algae, you may add sea salt, vinegar, hydrogen peroxide or bleach to the water to prevent algae growth.  If you add bleach or hydrogen peroxide you do not want your animals to drink this water.

·         To prevent algae growth in indoor fountains, keep the fountain out of direct sunlight as sunlight promotes algae growth.

·         Clean your fountain every month to three months.  All parts of the fountain should be taken apart and cleaned.  It is recommended that you use a toothbrush, detergent and warm water for cleaning.  Clean rocks, bowls and shells in the fountain as well.

·         Disassemble your fountain’s pump and clean the inside, as algae and mineral deposits commonly build up in the pump and may limit its ability to function properly.

·         Fountain pumps are not designed to work outside of water and should always be immersed when running.

·         Protect the area beneath your fountain from water.  Plexiglas and plastic works well.  Most fountains are designed to run without splashing, but if something interferes with the running water it may splash.

·         For the best performance from your fountain, use rain water or distilled water in your fountain.

By following these simple steps and guidelines you will have a fountain that is a joy to hear and watch for a long time to come and a fountain that will run at optimum performance for years to come.
