Construction

Gian Lorenzo Bernini was asked to sketch a new fountain in 1629 by Pope Urban VIII, but when the pope died, the project was simply terminated. Alessandro Galilei originally won the competition over Nicola Salvi, but Rome was not impressed that a Florentine won, so Salvi was awarded the project.

This genius work of art did not happen overnight. Work began on the fountain in 1732, but it was not until 1762 that it was finally complete. This was long after Clement’s death, so he never had the opportunity to see the final outcome.
